Ranger Solo
Extending the reach of Ranger to laptops and standalone machines.

Installer

Ranger Solo can be installed on Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows XP. The product installer simplifies configuration by customising the installation to fit the working environment. There are three options to choose from; Standard, Primary or Non-Educational environment.

Standard

By selecting Standard, the following users and associated security groups are created.

Username User Type
Manager No Security
Staff Solo Staff Security
Student1 Solo Standard Security
Student2 Solo Basic Security

Primary

Same as Standard, but the Solo Basic and Solo Standard groups are configured to use Ranger Desktop - a custom Windows Desktop interface that presents only large shortcut icons to programs or documents on the users' desktop.

Non-educational setup

By selecting Non-Educational the following users and associated security groups are created.

Username User Type
Manager No Security
User1 Solo Standard Security
User2 Solo Basic Security
User3 Solo Standard Security

Security & Environment Control

The security and environment settings applied to the user are determined by their group membership (local security groups). Depending on which installation option is selected, the groups will vary. Each group is preconfigured with security and environment settings similar to those used in Ranger for Networks.

Ranger Solo allows different users to have different levels of security, ranging from full administrative access to the hard drive and system settings, to a secure and stable Windows environment where the user cannot accidentally or deliberately reconfigure the machine, access the C drive, install software or modify the system.

Administration

Configuration is performed using two programs Solo Account Manager and Ranger Administrator.

Solo Account Manager (Ranger Account Manager Classic)

Solo Account Manager is used to create the user accounts and home folders. Solo Account Manager is also used to modify the users' group membership.

Solo Account Manager manages the whole process of creating an offline user, including creating the users' account, home area, profile area, and then sharing and setting the share and folder security.

Solo Account Manager can bulk create users from an import file (CSV format) and modify or delete multiple users.

Ranger Administrator

Ranger Administrator is used to configure the local security and environment settings. Options include Security, Quota Management, User Control Panel and Environment.

Security

Ranger Solo provides the same active security components as Ranger for Networks, which complements and expands upon features provided by Windows. Its unique 'Active Security' ensures users cannot run and install their own applications or gain access to unauthorised dialogs, machine and network resources.

Quota Enforcement

Disk quotas can be set to control how much space each user can use. This helps prevent the disk from running out of space and related issues - eg as not being able to save documents or the adverse affect on the computer's performance.

User Control Panel

Allows users to safely configure and customise their own working environment without affecting other users on the same machine.

Environment

From a single location, you can configure the user's Windows experience - e.g. look and feel, program shortcuts on the start menu, desktop and Windows security settings.

Centralised management

To simplify the management of multiple Ranger Solo installations, Ranger Solo can be configured to update its local configuration and program files from a Ranger for Network's server.

See Ranger for Networks integration for more details.

Solo Sync

Solo Sync automatically scans the users' home and network folders for new or modified files to be synchronised. This helps to ensure that the user has a consistent experience when on or off the network.
