Connectivity Testing Tool

This tool is designed to quickly and accurately determine whether your firewall is port forwarding traffic to your Outpost server machine.

Important: Due to the variety and complexity of firewalls and configurations, Sentinel cannot directly assist with the configuration of your port forwarding. The tools and tips here are provided for assistance only.

Ranger Outpost Test Server

This stand-alone application (Download Click Here) should be downloaded and run on the machine destined to be the Oupost server. It acts as a simple communications host server that listens for data on the specified port and echos the same data back to the sender on the same port.

Usage:

• Configure port forwarding to allow communications from a remote client to your Outpost server on the chosen port
  
• Download and run the Outpost Test Server application on the machine destined to be the Outpost server.
  
• Select the Network interface to listen on (if appropriate).
  
• Enter the port number being tested for Outpost communications through the firewall.
  
• Click 'Listen'.
  
• To test communications internally, use a machine on the LAN, to test communication through the firewall use an external machine (ie one not on the LAN) to connect to the Internet and open this web page.
  
• Enter your external router/gateway's IP address address and port being tested in the fields below.
  
• Click the 'Test' button.

After a few seconds, you should receive a notification page informing you whether the communication test was successful or not. If not, then either your gateway address is incorrect of your firewall is not port forwarding data correctly to the Outpost server.

This test can be repeated until port forwarding is configured successfully.

Online Connectivity Test Form

This web form sends a sequence of pre-configured data to the entered IP address and port. Once sent the page waits for a reply before displaying the results.

The IP address and port entered should be your site's externally visible gateway or router's IP address (not the Outpost server's internal LAN address) and the port should be the one that is being forwarded through the firewall to the Outpost server.

Please be patient for the results of this test. The connectivity test may take 20 - 30 seconds to complete.
