Question

Why do my Vista & Windows 7 client machines not connect to the Outpost Server, whereas all users on XP client machines can connect without any issues?

Symptoms

General connection error aborted.

Cause

Investigating the "Lmcompatibilitylevel" registry entry would suggest a mismatch of the NTLM protocol versions between these clients and Outpost server.

Resolution

Change or add the fiollowing registry entry to your client operating system

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
"lmcompatibilitylevel"=dword:00000001

Please see the following Microsoft Article for an explaination of the key:

Testing

We have tested it with the help of other schools experiencing this issue and proved that connections to an Outpost Server from a Vista or Windows 7 Outpost client could now be made.
