How to change the time taken for a browse in Remote Control?
Resolution
IMPORTANT: This document contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.
The Browse function within Remote Control, allows you to search your network to find Student machines to perform tasks to. The browse function sends a UDP broadcast packet out to all machines to check that the machines are ready for connection.
The default length of time that this takes is twelve seconds. This is made of three scans of your network, each lasting four seconds.
You may wish to change this setting to a longer period of time if you have a particularly slow network, or to shorter period if you have a fast network. You can edit the length of time it takes to browse your network, by editing the following registry entry on the Remote Control Tutor's machine.
Start Regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Productive Computer Insight\PCICTL\ConfigList\Ranger Remote Control
Name Lookup Delay
To add a Name Lookup Delay, add the following string value to the key:
NameLookup\Delay
The value for this string, specifies the delay between broadcast packets in seconds, or the amount of time that each scan will wait to recevie a response from a Student machine. Use this value in conjunction with Name Lookup Attempts to modify the amount of time spent performing browses. The browse is more likely to miss Clients if this value is too small.
You should not specify a value that when multiplied by the Name Lookup Attempts value is less than 4 seconds.
Name Lookup Attempts
To edit the number of Name Lookup Attempts, add the following string value to the Key above:
NameLookup\Tries
The value for this string value, specifies the number of name lookup packets broadcasted during a browse, or the number of times that a broadcast packet will be sent to your network.
The fewer broadcasts that are sent the lower the network traffic and the quicker the browse will complete
