Question

I get an error code 17 when I open Ranger Administrator. Why?

Symptoms

When Ranger Administrator starts the following error message is displayed "Your Ranger Suite Licence has become corrupt. Please contact technical support and quote code 17".

As the error message suggests the Ranger.dat file is either missing or is corrupt.

Cause

There are a number of reasons why the file may be missing or corrupt here are a few examples;

  • The file was accidentally deleted.
  • The file has been edited manually and there is a error in the code or file structure.
  • You are running Windows XP with SP1, and whilst saving changes in Ranger Administrator the Ranger.dat was locked by network users who were in the process of logging onto the Network. The file was in use by the Ranger Client causing the save operation to fail in turn causing the file to be corrupted.

Resolution

Restore the Ranger.dat file.

Instructions

Open the Ranger folder and look for a Ranger.dt and Ranger.dat file. If you find both files, compare the file size you should find the Ranger.dt file is larger, if so make a backup copy of the Ranger.dat by renaming it to Ranger.bak and then renaming the Ranger.dt to Ranger.dat. Once you have renamed the file try to open Ranger Administrator, if the error appears again you will need to restore the Ranger.dat from a previous backup.

Testing

Open Ranger Administrator, make a change to a setting (toggle something), save the changes and then close the program down. Try reopening the program and see if the setting has been saved.
