Question

How do I configure Ranger Remote Control to work in a Terminal server enviroment?

Symptoms

I am running in a Terminal services enviroment and would like to use Ranger Remote control to connect to my user sessions and use it to control and aid them in their work.

Resolution

Configuring Ranger Remote Control for Terminal Server.

This can be achieved by downloading a utility using the link below that will configure a terminal server with an RRC client to work with all the sessions. This is done by setting up an array of ports that you want RRC to use, one port for each session. By doing this your tutor machine can then browse and connect to each port number as if it is a different client computer.

Note: When this is done RRC will use the students login name not the computer name when displaying found clients.

Server Configuration Setup File: Terminal_Server_Config.exe

Instructions

To configure RRC for Terminal Services

  1. Install RRC on the terminal server using the release setup.exe file which can be downloaded from our web site at (you will require a username and password)
  2. Once RRC is installed, Download the Terminal_Server_Config.exe file from the above link in the solution section.
  3. Run the Terminal_Server_config.exe on the Terminal server.
  4. When prompted enter the first TCP/IP port number and the number of Terminal server sessions you want to support.
  5. When installation is complete RRC will be ready for use with Terminal services

Next you will be required to configure the Tutor to be able to browse and connect to these sessions.

To configure RRC Tutor for multiple port browsing and connecting.

RRC Version 8.00 or Later

  1. Start the RRC Tutor and from the school menu select configuration.
  2. Select conectivity and press the settings button in the browsing section.
  3. Press the add button to add a new broadcast address. Then press the advanced button.
  4. Select the Terminal services option and enter the IP address of the Terminal server and the TCP port range used.
  5. Press the OK button to save the changes.
  6. Once the Terminal server addresss has been added RRC can be used as normal to connect to or browse for students.

RRC Versions Prior to 8.00

  1. In the RRC tutor goto School - Configuration - General tab and find the "At start up section".
  2. Specify the IP address of the Terminal Server and the TCP/IP port numbers to Browse for at start up
  3. Examples are shown below.

10.0.0.51:5000,5005 would connect to clients at 10.0.0.51:5000 and port 5005.
10.0.0.51:5000-5005 would connect to clients on ports 5000 to 5005.
It is also possible to string these two methods together e.g.
10.0.0.51:5000-5005,6000-6010,7000-7010

Testing

Please be aware that the feature works by disabling the Client32 service on the Terminal server, it then adds a line into the run section of the registry so that client32.exe is run as an application each time a user logs into a session and binds to the lowest available port.

To confirm that this works and that you are happy with the results log on to a couple of TS sessions and then use your tutor to browse and connect to them.
