Font Dialog Error "This is not a valid measurement"

Question

Why do I get the following error "This is not a valid measurement" if I modify the font in Word XP?

Symptoms

"This is not a valid measurement"

When a user creates a new document within MS Office applications and then proceed to modify text, format font, format a shape, or format word art and then click 'ok' the error message appears.

Cause

Ranger's active security continually scans dialogs for illegal paths and characters. In this instance there are hidden dialogs that are not visible because they are on a background tab. Ranger's active security has already seen an illegal character and has removed the value from the field. When the user tries to access the dialog the manipulated field fails with an error.

Resolution

It is possible to manipulate a configuration file to exclude particular Office window dialogs. Ranger will then not interact with the dialog and so the error will not occur. The first step is to update your ranger.dat file with an updated list. We add to this file each time a problem is reported we may have already identified your problem. If not you can manually add to the bespoke exceptions section in the ranger.dat and add your own dialog title to the list.

Instructions

Option 1 - Update your Ranger.dat
Download this text file
Open with notepad and copy all of the text
Find the ranger.dat in the root of the ranger folder
Find the section entitled "Bespoke File Dialogs"
Replace the section with the text from the downloaded file (paste clipboard)
Save the ranger.dat file.

Option 2 - Manual amend the ranger.dat file
Find the ranger.dat file which is in the root of the ranger folder,
Find the section entitled "Bespoke File Dialogs",
Find the following lines (see below) and add to the end of the line the window title with the prefix of E e.g.if the tile was 'Word Art' add 'EWord Art'

Save the ranger.dat file.

Testing

Logon to a workstation as a secure user and try to replicate the error in the same way as before. You may find you need to add additional window titles until no more errors are reported.
