Question

How do I configure Web Tracking to ignore and not log certain web sites?

Symptoms

Cause

When you view the top visited web sites you find the top websites are local intranet or local HTTP based services such as WSUS or Antivirus updates. Web Tracking monitors all HTTP requests over the local NIC including known and trusted sites. Given the frequency of these local requests the log files can become large and prevent end user sites of interest from rating high on the top sites ranking.

Resolution

Web Tacking can be configured to ignore web sites

Instructions

To add web sites to the ignore list follow these simple instructions

  1. Go to the Ranger folder on your Primary Server (The one that displays all users in LAN Ranger)
  2. Edit the "webtrackingignores.dat" file in Notepad
  3. Add the URL of the website to be ignored. Detailed instructions on format and structure can be found within the file.

A good way to determine web sites you don't wan't to monitor is to generate a Summary All Summary report and review the top sites. Identify if the sites are internal and then decide if you want these sites to be ignored.

Testing

Changes to the Web Tracking driver will take effect the next time the user logs on. We suggest waiting a day to allow all clients to update. Then run a report and confirm the sites you don't want logged are no longer being shown.
