Question
Are there any compatibility issues with Fireworks MX and Ranger?
Symptoms
Macromedia Fireworks MX hangs or displays the following error:
Window Title: Macromedia Fireworks MX
Error msg: Could not complete your request. An internal error occurred.
When a user tries to open, save or export a drawing Fireworks encounters errors.
Cause
The problem relates to the users 'My Pictures' registry key. The value defined is invalid.
By default Ranger modifies the key through the preshellnt.rrg file. The path will reflect the location specified in the groups default open save path (Ranger Admin > Security > Drives Tab > OpenSave path). The folder name 'My Pictures' will be appended to the end of the path specified i.e.
Default OpenSave Path: H:My Documents
Registry key is set to: H:My DocumentsMy Pictures
Resolution
Change the users 'My Pictures' location to point to a sub folder within the users home area. Verify the registry key is not pointing to the root of a drive.
Please note: During testing we discovered this problem has been resolved in the latest version Fireworks MX 2004. If you find you cannot resolve the problem by altering the users 'My Pictures' path then upgrading to the latest version maybe an alternative solution.
Instructions
Open Ranger Administrator and using a test group change the default open save path. If the path is set to c: or h: then try changing it to h:my documents.
If this doesn't work try changing the key directly in the registry. You will need to relax the security on the group to allow you to open the registry. Open the registry and go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer User Shell Folders and change the 'My Pictures' value to a different path.
Testing
After changing the users 'My Pictures' location open Fireworks MX and try opening, saving or exporting a drawing.
