Question
How do you setup Ranger Remote Control's Remote Deploy?
Cause
You need to rollout the software and or the configuration or licence file.
Resolution
Install Ranger Remote Control's Remote Deploy module.
Instructions
Preparation
- Perform a full installation of the product on the PC you wish to deploy from.
- Create a folder on the local PC. This folder will house the files needed for deploy. You may name this folder anything you wish.
- Copy the Ranger Remote Control installation file to the folder you created. This file is called setup.exe, and can be downloaded from our website or copied from a CD. Do not rename this file.
- Navigate to the folder where you initially installed Ranger Remote Control (default is C:Program FilesRanger Remote Control) and locate the Client32.ini file. Copy this file into your distribution folder.
- In the same location, also locate the NSM.lic file. This is your license information. Copy this file into your distribution folder.
Deploying the software Package and the licence file
- Open the Ranger Remote Control Deploy application and click Deploy. Then choose to deploy Ranger Remote Control Package.
- Go to properties, under the General tab, enter a description. Then, browse to the folder that you created as your distribution folder.
- Click on the Edit button, and a new dialog will appear. These will be the options that Ranger Remote Control Deploy will install on the remote machines.
- Put a check in the box for Components, as well as a check in the box for Icons. Select which components and icons you wish to install remotely. If you do not wish to install any icons, simply leave the box for icons checked but do not check any of the boxes underneath it.
- Once you have selected your install parameters, click on File, Save and save this file into your distribution folder, and name the file values.txt. You should now have a total of four (4) files in your distribution folder.
- Next, go through the remaining tabs in the Ranger Remote Control Install Properties and select whichever options you want. Once you have finished, click on OK, then Close and this brings you back to the main Ranger Remote Control Deploy window.
- Select your domain or workgroup from the left-hand pane. Ranger Remote Control Deploy will then probe the machines in your domainworkgroup to check for operating system versions and if there is a pre-existing Ranger Remote Control client.
- When the probe is finished, select the machine(s) that you wish to deploy to, right-click on them and choose Deploy, Ranger Remote Control Package and then click on the Deploy button. The status window will come up and give you a real time status report of the installation progress.
Please note that Ranger Remote Control Deploy only works from NT based systems to NT based systems. Ranger Remote Control Deploy reads your domain or workgroup information using the Microsoft SMB. This means that any machines that you can find through Network Neighbourhood or My Network Places will also be visible in Ranger Remote Control Deploy. If the machines are not visible to you through Windows networking, then Ranger Remote Control Deploy will not see them either.
Testing
Open Ranger Remote Control Tutor and scan the network for Remote Clients. At this point you should see the computers you have distributed the Remote Control package to. Try controlling the machine(s) to test the software's functionality.
