Ranger Account manager (RAM) hangs when I try to use it on a workstation

Question

Why doesn't RAM work when I'm using it on a client workstation?

Cause

RAM requires certain files to be installed onto the local workstation in order to run. These components are installed as standard on the server during a ranger installation, however they are not installed on the client workstations by default.

Resolution

You need to Run a program called RAMClient.exe which installs the components on the local machine.

Instructions

The first thing you will need is the RAMClient.exe file. This file will be located on the ranger directory in the setup folder on the server.

To be able to download this file you will need to input some information and have current Software Maintenance Agreement.

Now that you have the RAMClient.exe you will need to install it onto each workstation.

To install:

1. Run the RAMClient.exe on any workstation you wish to use Ranger Account Manager from. This setup package will not install any programs, but will ensure VB runtime components are configured correctly.
2. On the desktops of the users that will be using RAM, create a shortcut link to Ranger Account Manager e.g. \\servername\Ranger\Ram.exe
3. RAM can be configured to allow staff users to run it in a cut down mode allowing them only to change the users passwords.

The first time Ranger Account Manager runs on a workstation it will scan for network domain controllers and in multi-domain controller environments ask for the name of the server on which home directories are stored.

Testing

Run RAM and see if it now works correctly
