Ranger Outpost Client Logon Error Messages

Question

Why do I get a logon error in Ranger Outpost Client when trying to connect to my school's Ranger Outpost Server?

Symptoms

Error Message 1

When trying to connect I get an error unable to establish the name followed by the name of a computer.

Error Message 2

When trying to connect I get an error (No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.) while Ranger Outpost is connecting....

Error Message 3

When trying to connect I get an error (The connection to the Outpost Server has been closed) While Ranger Outpost is Securing session....

Error Message 4

When trying to connect I get an error (The connection to the Outpost Server has been closed) While Ranger Outpost is Establishing session....

Ranger Outpost will generate a logon error if the conditions are not correct for a successful logon. For example if the logon username or password is incorrect or the computer does not have access to the Internet an error will be reported.

Cause

Ranger Outpost requires a number of conditions to be true in order to successfully logon a user. Sometimes logon errors will be down to the user entering their logon details incorrectly and sometimes the error will be due to a miss configuration of the server software and therefore only the network administrator can resolve this.

Resolution

Possible reasons for error message 1

This error can mean several things.

1. You are no longer connected to the internet.
2. Your trying to connect to the wrong server. In which case this is something the network administrator will need to test. It maybe helpful if you write down the error message and give this to them to review.

 
Possible reasons for error message 2

This error is due to the way your computer is trying to connect to the server. It is able to see the server but is not allowed to talk to it. To resolve this error you will need to contact your network administrator.

 
Possible reasons for error message 3

This error means that your user hasn't been setup to use Ranger Outpost, you will need to contact your network administrator and ask him to make you a member of an Outpost group.

 
Possible reasons for error message 4

This error is telling you that you password is incorrect. Just try to log on again and make sure you type your password in correctly, remember passwords are case sensitive. If you still get errors contact your network administrator.


Possible reasons for error message 5

This error has occurred because of a firewall, Personal firewalls help pc's stay safe from unwanted intruders. When Ranger outpost is first run, the firewall won't know if Ranger Outpost is safe or not. You will need to setup the Firewall to acknowledge Ranger Outpost as safe.

Below are instructions to assist in making these changes for 2 possible products that could cause the error.

   1. Norton Personal Firewall

• First you will need to load the Norton Personal firewall program.
• In here select the Norton Personal firewall and click on configure, this will display a dialogue box as shown in
• From here you need to highlight the Outpost client program and Select "Allow All"

    2. Zone Alarm

• First you will need to load the "Zone Alarm Control Centre"
• Select Program control from the left hand menu; locate the Ranger Outpost program from the list. From here you can right click on Ranger Outpost and select Allow under the internet section.

• First you will need to load the Mcaffee firewall program.
• In here select "control internet programs"
• From here you need to highlight the Outpost client program and Select "Allow this program to have full, unfiltered access to the internet"

Testing

Close Ranger Outpost Client and then reopen the program again. Then retype the logon username and password making sure that the password is typed in correctly.
