Question

How do I configure Ranger Account Manager to allow staff to change users passwords without giving them administrative privilege?

Cause

You would like to allow staff to change the students passwords.

Resolution

Starting Ranger Account Manager with a "/staff" parameter will automatically start RAM in a cut down mode allowing the user access to only RAM's "Modify Users" wizard.

When in "Staff mode", Ranger Account Manager will only allow the user to reset the passwords and modify the account properties on one or multiple students. Staff users will not be able to change user's group memberships or their profile, home directory and login script fields.

Additionally, user accounts with the word "admin", "manager" or "ranger" anywhere in the username will not be displayed in the user list.

The ability to unlock an account that has been locked due to incorrect password attempts has been added in this version. All other Ranger Account Manager functionality remains unchanged.

Instructions

Important Note: For this to work on client machines Key components need to be installed. For more information go to this article http://www.rangersuite.com/articles/view/0000000035

The staff group (or users that are going to use RAM) must be made members of the Account Operators group.Once your user is a member of the Account Operators group you can add a shortcut to their desktop. On staff desktops (or users that are going to use RAM) create the shortcut to Ranger Account Manager with a "/staff" parameter: Ranger/Ram.exe /staff

The first time Ranger Account Manager runs on a workstation it will scan for network domain controllers and in multi-domain controller environments ask for the name of the server on which home directories are stored.

This updated Ranger Account Manager is available for customers with software maintenance as a pre-release download from the Network Ranger updates section. (Username and password required)

Testing

Log on as a staff user and use the shortcut to run Ranger Account manager. It should load the program and go straight to the modify user area.
